Hugo Lloris, the skipper of Tottenham, will be sidelined for six to eight weeks after sustaining a knee injury.
The 36-year-old suffered a ligament injury in Spurs' 1-0 Premier League victory over Manchester City on Sunday.
Antonio Conte, the head coach of Tottenham, will be severely disappointed by the injury because his team's schedule over the next three weeks includes London derbies against West Ham United and Chelsea, as well as a clash with AC Milan in the round of 16 of the Champions League.
Prior to travelling to AC Milan on Tuesday for their first leg, they play Leicester City in the league on Saturday.
Fraser Forster, a former Southampton player and England international, is a backup for Spurs.
Other options include academy players Brandon Austin and Alfie Whiteman, but neither has much senior-level experience.
Spurs are vying for a Champions League spot for the upcoming season and are currently sixth in the Premier League.
Forster, who joined Spurs on a free transfer in the summer, has only played in one Premier League game for the club — a 2-2 draw with Brentford on Boxing Day.
Lloris retired from international football this month after leading France to the 2018 World Cup title.
In 21 league games this season, he has seven clean sheets under his belt.
